Imaginative Prayer

Imaginative prayer, also known as Gospel Contemplation (per St. Ignatius), is a scripture-based practice where believers use their God-given imagination to enter into biblical stories and encounter God in a personal way. Unlike parables, which convey direct wisdom, this method is best suited for narrative stories from the Bible - such as those involving Jesus' life, Paul's conversion, or the disciples' experiences.

Steps for Practicing Imaginative Prayer:

  1. Choose a Scripture Story: Prefer narrative events over parables.

  2. Prepare Your Heart: Use music, silence, or nature sounds to settle in.

  3. Pray for Guidance: Ask for God's grace, protection, and openness.

  4. Read the Passage: Slowly read or listen to the story multiple times.

  5. Visualize the Scene: Allow the story to unfold in your imagination.

  6. Engage the Senses: Observe sights, sounds, smells and emotions.

  7. Enter the Story: You may become an observer, a character, or yourself in the scene.

  8. Remain Present: Let the experience unfold, possibly extending beyond Scripture.

  9. Reflect Afterwards: Journal what happened, what God may have revealed, and your emotional responses.

  10. Give Thanks: End by thanking God, even if the experience seemed uneventful.

The practice is about deepening intimacy with God through scripture by letting Him speak through your creative imagination.
